TechCrunch has just released an article stating that Amazon has bought Double Helix Games which includes both the talent and IP. Double Helix does not own the Killer Instinct IP but what does this mean for Killer Instinct and the hopeful Season 2? We will have to wait to to hear for an official announcement from Microsoft or Double Helix. It does not sound like we should be worried though as Amazon has stated that Double Helix’s current lineup of games and other future developments will be supported, following the acquisition.
From the article:
Amazon has acquired a gaming studio called Double Helix Games, TechCrunch has learned, and Amazon now confirms. The deal was for both talent and IP, we understand. Financial terms have not been disclosed.
News of the deal leaked due to an invitation to joint recruiting event from Amazon and Double Helix Games taking place in L.A. on February 13th. The acquisition announcement was planned to take place at that time, most likely.
Amazon has provided TechCrunch with the following statement regarding the deal:
“Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovate games for customers.”
Double Helix has a history of creating popular games for nearly 20 years, when you consider the work Shiny and The Collective had done before the merger. Shiny, for example, was the creator of classic like “Earthworm Jim,” “Sacrifice, MDK” and “Enter the Matrix,” while The Collective had previously put out titles like “Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb,” “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith,” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
As Double Helix, the firm has a decent track record as well. Its most popular game today is “Killer Instinct,” but throughout the years, it has created a number of PC and console games including “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” “Green Latern: Rise of the Manhunters,” “Silent Hill: Homecoming,” and “Front Mission Evolved,” among others. As you can tell by the titles, it specializes in large-scale action games based on blockbuster franchises.
Amazon says that Double Helix’s current lineup of games and other future developments will be supported, following the acquisition.
We will let you all know as soon as anymore information is known.
This could go 1 of 2 ways, season 1 is the end and amazon done fucked it up! Or the more likely situation is that amazon a huge company with lots of funds available will be funding more ki content and maybe even better for ki in the long run. I really hope that amazon speeds up production and allows DH to do their thing and make a ton more content for this game. I would be so pissed if ki3 didn’t have riptor or cinder in it. This game needs to live on.
Indeed and absolutely particularly for the SECOND option which I now have a really good feeling that it WILL happen and CONTINUES to be so. After all this is AMAZON we’re talking about here
Well let’s just hope that Season 2 of Killer Instinct WILL be confirm real soon
Just one more company Nintendo could have bought and SHOULD have bought. How you gonna let Amazon get in there and buy them. Really? Microsoft either. I mean, they are working on Killer Instinct for you and you let Amazon buy them right from under your nose?
What is wrong with these companies?
I really don’t like the thought of Amazon strongarming their way into the gaming industry.
