EXCLUSIVE: Imagining Killer Instinct With Guest Characters

In today’s fighters, there are often times when characters outside of the fighter’s respective universe will enter the fray, usually as a temporary guest character for that particular title. One of the first big titles to this was Soul Caliber II in the previous generation. Each version of the game had its own exclusive guest character: the GameCube version received Link from The Legend of Zelda, the Playstation 2 version Heihachi from Tekken, and the Xbox version had Spawn. Nintendo delved into the guest character scene with their Wii title, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which featured both Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog) and Snake (Metal Gear Solid). Even the latest Mortal Kombat title brought Freddy Kreuger and his razor sharp claws into the fighting scene. And of course, you can’t forget the exclusive Halo Spartan character in the Xbox 360 version of Dead Or Alive 4.

As you can clearly see, having guest characters from other games and/or movies is a common occurrence. So what if Double Helix and Microsoft did something similar with the Xbox One Killer Instinct? For a game that is expected to be supported throughout the entire Xbox One’s life cycle, it wouldn’t be an extraordinary move to have a guest character featured in the game at some point. But who would best suit the franchise and feel right at home with the rest of the KI roster? Here are a couple of examples…

The Battletoads

Did you know the Battletoads are actually human? That’s right. The Battletoads were human video game testers testing a video game called–naturally–Battletoads, that became a part of the game itself as the Battletoads Zitz, Rash and Pimple. Now imagine an alternate version of this story that would fit with the lore of Killer Instinct. Ultra Tech taking a human and performing anthropomorphic tests on him that results in the creation of a Battletoad. The Battletoad is entered into the KI tournament to see how he performs with the promise of being returned to his human form should he successfully defeat his opponents. Ultra Tech has some of the best scientists in the world, having spliced human and reptile DNA to create the intelligent Riptor and the even creating the fire being Cinder. So it wouldn’t be far-fetched to believe they could develop a human-turned-toad battle warrior, right?

Pummel Weed

Killer Instinct is known for having random, off-the-wall characters that really don’t make sense together, and yet they do. Werewolves, aliens, cyborgs, ancient warriors, Amazonian Queens… It really is out there isn’t it? With that in mind, a living, breathing plant capable of throwing punches and kicking ass certainly wouldn’t be an unimaginable new entry to the roster. Pummel Weed from Kameo: Elements of Power would feel right at home with the rest of the KI cast. Imagine that Ultra Tech discovers a new plant species displaying human intelligence in a remote region of one of the world’s jungles. Using their scientific wit, Ultra Tech combines actual human DNA with the plant and Pummel Weed is born.

Opinions From The KI Community

So I asked Killer Instinct fans on Twitter what guest characters they would like to see and here’s a few of their opinions:

  • @KrAmZ80: General Raam from gears of war.. Has to be from an xbox exclusive of course. He could pull off some mean combos.
  • @Mayhemuk76: Chun Li, just imagine the combos with the her lightening legs.
  • @AizenCaptain5: I can really see a predator in #KI but Fulgore pretty much is one… An Alien too, AvP seems like it would fit well with KI.
  • @hozboy: Spawn because he is dark and he fits the mold of destruction #BadAss
  • @el_gnagarino: He-Man and Skeletor!
  • @PDXGamersUnited: Tough choice. I think it should be Master Chief.
