Releasing next week alongside the Xbox One and Killer Instinct is the Ultimate Killer Instinct Fan Book, a strategy guide for the new game from Prima Games. We recently had the opportunity to interview the author of the guide, Reepal Parbhoo, to inform us on the guide’s production, the challenges of working on the guide, meeting the teams at Microsoft and Double Helix and more! Read our exclusive interview below and don’t forget to pre-order your copy of the Ultimate Killer Instinct Fan Book!
Killer Instinct Central: How and when did production of the Killer Instinct Fan Book begin?
Reepal Parbhoo: The total production is actually two major parts – One being the ULTRA Fanbook which is physical print book and has a ton of art, behind the scenes info, and interviews with development teams at both Microsoft and Double Helix. The second major component is the digital strategy guide which is included FREE with purchase of the ULTRA Fanbook. Production of the Ultra Fanbook started months ago. We flew out to Microsoft for a few days and got to meet the development team there. That was our first hands on time with the game as well. We actually met the Penny Arcade team at the time and demo’d the game for them since they were working on something, which we now know is the Pin Ultimate Edition.
KIC: What can you tell us about the living mobile guide? Will Orchid be a part of that guide upon release?
RIP: The living mobile guide is what we are referring to as the digital strategy guide. It’s what you would normally expect to find in a physical strategy guide – except that we can update it post release. All six launch characters will be included upon release with frame data and hitboxes. Since Prima is the official licensed strategy provider for the game, Double Helix has been awesome in giving us access to a lot of feedback and data that we will continue to post after the game launches so strategy content is consistently being updated.
KIC: How difficult was it to create this book with the game evolving so quickly? Was the decision for a living strategy guide with videos online made early on?
RIP: We knew characters were going to be rolled out post-release and its not uncommon for fighting games to get patched now, so it was an easy choice to go digital for the strategy guide. In the past, you would buy a physical strategy guide for a fighting game, then there could be a day 1 patch changing properties of the moves, and all of a sudden that physical guide is outdated. Obviously we wanted to avoid that. Going digital also gives us the advantage of having video content included as well. So now instead of just listing out a combo list – we can have video of it as well. Instead of just telling you HOW to zone with a character, we can use video to show examples. This gives us a lot more freedom to do whatever is right for the game.
With the game evolving so quickly, time is always against us. We always try to have the latest build, but things are constantly being tuned. As a result, we find ourselves updating the digitalstrategy guide with every build. The Jago mini booklet that comes with the ULTRA Fanbook is obviously from weeks ago, so odds are that on day 1 there may be changes to the digital version, as well as additional content + video for Jago.
KIC: What was the most interesting thing you learned through the interviews and behind the scene tours while creating this book?
RIP: I think the most interesting thing I took away from meeting both teams is just how complex it is to create a game of this scale for a launch platform. There are so many people involved on both ends, trying to achieve their own goals. Its mind-blowing the amount of work all of them have to do. While at Microsoft I got to meet/play against Ken Lobb and James Goddard as well. Ken Lobb, obviously one of the fathers of the KI brand. James Goddard goes way back and was on balance teams for the Street Fighter 2 games and if I remember correctly, was the designer for DeeJay! So meeting and getting to play with those guys was crazy.
KIC: Why was Jago chosen to receive the special sixteen page pull-out strategy guide over the other characters?
RIP: Jago is the main protagonist of the franchise and he is also the character that everyone and their kid sister will have access to when the game launches. We wanted everyone who gets the fanbook to have strategy for that character. Everyone who purchases the ULTRA Fanbook and gets that Jago pull-out strategy guide already has access to the full digital guide for all the characters anyway.
KIC: Who all was involved with the writing of this book?
RIP: The ULTRA Fanbook was my primary responsibility. Going forward, Bill Menoutis and I are both working on the digital strategy guide. For the fanbook there is also a foreword by Ken Lobb and a lot of information from Double Helix Art Director Bob Donatucci. Of course, there is an awesome team over at Prima Games who helps make all of the content look awesome and presentable.
KIC: Is there anything else about the Fan Book you would like to share?
RIP: It DOES have character and stage concept art for characters 7 & 8 and some other cool surprises that people have not seen yet. Also, I just want to give a shoutout to Bob Donatucci, Dave V., and Rich Bantegui over at Double Helix for all of their help in getting the projects done.
A huge thanks to Reepal for the opportunity to conduct this interview! Once again, pre-order your copy today and ensure yourself a copy by launch day on November 22nd!
The last part made me feel REALLY glad for having pre-ordered that book! Since I won’t be able to get my hands on the game (or the console) until 2014, this will be my most anticipated item this year!
I don’t know… At first I wanted to buy this book, but what happens when “second season” of the game comes out? It means 8 new characters that won’t be mentioned at all in this book: no concept art for them, no stage concept if new stages will be available, everything that’ll come in the second wave on DLCs won’t be featured in the physical book. It’s a bummer.
True, they won’t be featured in the physical book, but most (if not all) artwork concept will be in the game as unlockable content and maybe the digital guide will include it too when it updates. On the other hand, clocking at 200+ pages (according to Amazon) and featuring the history of the franchise including past games, I believe it’s the best book about KI you’ll find out there.
If it were me i would want a book for each season. No reason they cant do that right?
^$#@omagawd, a book for each season would be awesome!!
Exactly ^
They are a business first and foremost so it would be foolish of them NOT to do so
