Back in 2008, a photo of interest surfaced online of some never before Killer Instinct sheet music.
This sparked rumors that a new KI was in development at Rare and fans were both excited and optimistically cautious (and why shouldn’t they be? Rare had consistently been teasing the game at every opportunity they had). Up until recently, it all remained nothing more than a rumor, but things changed after a brief Twitter exchange a few weeks back.
Mick Gordon, composer of the upcoming Xbox One Killer Instinct, asked former KI composer Robin Beanland via Twitter about the picture himself. Robin replied, confessing that the picture was indeed real and was deliberately leaked in an attempt to gauge interest for a new title. See the entirety of the Twitter exchange below:
Bearing this revelation in mind, it raises some interesting questions on how KI would have turned out should it have actually begun development then. For starters, it would have been on Xbox 360 and much of the original Killer Instinct staff was still employed at Rare at the time. Chris Tilston, Robin Beanland (still there!), Chris Seavor and Mark Betteridge. We would have surely received a much different game than what’s being developed by Double Helix today. For better or for worse? We’ll never know.
What are your thoughts on this? Are you glad the game is just now being developed or would you have liked to seen it revived years ago at Rare with some of the original creators? Share your opinions in the comments!
Honestly, it would have meant less community interaction if Rare was doing it. I love how double helix is bringing us the game as its being made and taking soooooo much feedback (a little to much in the case of changing the announcer from the evo build to the gamescon build, I hope DH realises it was a minority that disliked the evo builds announcer). If too many original rare guys were on it the game may have ended up more of the style of KI2 rather than KI1.
That’s true, but it probably also would have meant less pessimism for the game too. That could have made this X1 game more anticipated since it would have given people an opportunity to get acquainted with the series five years ago. There are loads of people that shake this game off as another Capcom Clone simply because they are ignorant to any kind history of the series
As great of a job DH is doing, I can’t imagine Rare doing it any better. The fact that DH is looking to make the game as good as it can be by gathering feedback while the game is in development is the right way to go. I honestly wouldn’t want it any other way. DH is doing everything right as far as I’m concerned.
