Welcome to the Killer Instinct Central ‘Community Interview Feature’ where we interview YOU about gaming and Killer Instinct! This week features Fernando Gonzalez, so read on for this Killer Instinct fans love for gaming and, of course, KI…
KIC: Tell us a bit about yourself. How long have you been playing video games?
Fernando: I’ve been playing video games since I was a kid. I Started playing on the Snes which is where I first played Killer Instinct.
KIC: Is there any particular video game that led to you picking up gaming as a hobby?
Fernando: As I got older I brought out my old consoles and started playing a lot of my childhood games. Games like Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, and many other N64 and Wii games got me back into gaming . It made me remember how much fun I used to have as a kid playing video games. I got an Xbox One from there and started playing more recent games. When I heard Killer Instinct was back on Xbox One, I had to play it. I hyped myself up for the game and when I got it I was not disappointed. This game was one of the games that got me into fighting games to begin with.
KIC: Let’s talk Killer Instinct. What is it about the franchise that makes you a fan?
Fernando: Almost everything about the franchise makes me a fan. The characters, the mechanics, the music, the visuals, the sound effects, and the announcer all make Killer Instinct an experience. All those things make Killer Instinct my favorite fighting game of all time. It’s one of the most satisfying and rewarding games to play. Even when you lose you can’t be mad at the game. It’s full of high risk, high reward situations. It’s a game that is so easy to pick up, but much harder to actually master and doesn’t rely heavily on mashing one button to get auto combos.
KIC: What character is your main and why?
Fernando: My main is Sadira. She caught my attention when I started playing this game and was searching for a main. Never expected it to be her but after trying out some of her tech and loving her design, she became the one. She’s awesome to play as because she has really flashy combos and cross-ups. Her very high mobility and decent damage make her a threat. Personally I like characters with high mobility and flashy air combos. Her character design is one of the best things about her too. I personally think she’s one of the best designed characters in the game, and the fact that I don’t run into many Sadiras online makes playing her even better. If a new KI were to arise, she NEEDS to be in it. Very underrated character.
KIC: What is your preferred game mode to play in and why?
Fernando: My favorite game mode would be the online mode. Playing online is really fun because the online for this game runs great. The huge KI community makes it so that you don’t run into the same people too often, and it’s always a different experience with each match. I also like the 2 of 3 thing that happens when you fight people of higher ranks. It makes the game feel competitive and makes the wins feel more fair and rewarding.
KIC: How do you feel about guest characters being introduced to the franchise?
Fernando: I think it’s awesome to introduce guest characters into this game. I feel like it’s become a standard in fighting games to have at least one guest character. The guest characters chosen for this game were all very appropriate. I feel like in the future it would be nice to revive some old Rare franchises as guest characters just like they did with Rash from Battle Toads. Guest characters bring hype to a franchise, especially if the guest characters are introduced later in a series’ life span because it brings back any lost hype that a game had. The more unpredictable the character is, the better.
KIC: The music is one of the things that really defines the franchise. What song is your jam?
Fernando: The music in the first 2 KI games were great, but I think the music in the new KI was mind blowing. The music was so good. Every character’s theme is so good that it’s hard to pick a favorite. I’m really happy that Sadira has such a killer theme, but I feel like my favorite theme in the game is Kan Ra’s theme. It fits his character very well and goes so hard. Heavy rock has always made KI music stand out and awesome, but the mixture of heavy metal/rock with traditional genres of music put into one character’s track is done flawlessly. The music is so good in this game and fits every character so well.If a new game were to be made I hope the music is even better.

KIC: Killer Instinct has a wide range of character types including cyborgs, a wolf, aliens, a dinosaur, and more. What character type currently NOT featured in the franchise would you like to see?
Fernando: I would like to see maybe some kind of sea monster/man or woman.
KIC: What would you want and expect from a brand new Killer Instinct?
Fernando: In a brand new KI, I would like to see the entire roster (and as many of the guests as possible) make a comeback. Redesigns would be awesome. There should also be costume selections for the classic costumes, and the KI 2013 costumes. I really like the designs of all the characters from the current game and it would be a shame to not bring them back. They could even be custom options if possible. I feel like all the music tracks should also come back and be available along with the new tracks that come out for the characters. Customization should be even bigger in the next one. The customization options for the current KI are cool but it’s very limited. New characters would obviously be needed for a new game. Character interactions in the intros and outros would be great too. New stages and stages for characters that didn’t get any during season 3. Better visuals, keep all the cool stage and music dynamics, bring back stage ultras and ultimates, and just make the game a complete upgrade from the current one. I hope Microsoft sees the potential in of this franchise and funds it to make a new KI the best it can possibly be. Also, I don’t know if this counts, but more KI figures like for example a Sadira one would be nice c;
